FDA Ketoacidosis Warning Lends Support To Plaintiff Filing Invokana Lawsuit
February 10, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the recent occurrence of lawsuits filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson corporation). The lawsuits, which appear to be growing in number, allege that Janssen, who manufactures diabetes drug Invokana, has downplayed the risky side effects of the drug. This comes after new label warnings have been placed on the drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which discuss a potentially life-threatening condition termed diabetic ketoacidosis, where patients develop too much acid in their bloodstream.
The prescribing information that comes with Invokana, an SGLT2 inhibitor drug, states warnings about multiple side effects, including: low blood pressure, diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney disease and kidney infections, bone fractures and lowered bone density, urinary tract infections and yeast infections, blood infections, and high cholesterol levels. The FDA felt that these warnings needed to be revised and they issued new revisions in December of 2015.
Prior to this most recent label revision, the FDA also issued a warning specifically about diabetic ketoacidosis in May of 2015. This warning followed 73 ketoacidosis reports from patients taking either Invokana or similar SGLT2 inhibitors. It was additionally reported that side effects from the drugs had been experienced in as little as 3 months after starting to take it.
Ketoacidosis is not the only side effect which has been linked to Invokana. Additional side effect reports involve bone fractures, kidney failure, heart attacks, and strokes. Before its 2013 approval, clinical trials on Invokana highlighted an increased risk of heart attack and stroke for those taking the drug. This risk was noted within the first 30 days of treatment. As Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors are considered new drugs, much research is still being done on them.
