FDA Ketoacidosis Warning Provides Support For Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Allegations

March 28, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on several lawsuits recently filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of corporate giant Johnson & Johnson). The lawsuit plaintiffs allege that Janssen, who manufactures new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana, has potentially downplayed some dangerous side effects linked to the drug. These revelations now combine with an announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which indicated the requirement of new label warnings for the drug.

Warnings are reported to discuss a potentially life-threatening condition which several Invokana plaintiffs have also mentioned called diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis develops when a body’s bloodstream contains too much toxic acid (or ketones). This condition has been reported to the FDA through adverse event reports involving patients taking Invokana who have allegedly developed it.

The warning information that comes on Invokana packaging discusses multiple side effects including low blood pressure and blood infections, diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney disease and infections, bone fractures and lowered bone density, urinary tract infections and yeast infections, and high cholesterol levels. Reportedly, the FDA decided that the current warnings needed to be revised and announced this decision in December of 2015.

Before this announcement, the FDA released a public safety warning concerning diabetic ketoacidosis in May of 2015. The release of this warning reportedly followed 73 adverse event reports involving ketoacidosis development among patients using either Invokana or similar SGLT2 class inhibitor drugs. It was noted that some patients reported that these side effects were experienced in as little as 3 months after beginning use of the drug.
