Fifth In A Series Of Talc Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits Pushes Forward

April 11, 2017 – – A representative for TalcumPowder.org has reported that the fifth in a series of talc ovarian cancer lawsuits is set to begin within the next few days. The trial is being conducted in Missouri’s 22nd Circuit Court in St. Louis and will hear the case of a woman who claims that she developed ovarian cancer after using talc powder products manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.

Lois Slemp is now in Stage III cancer, which means her prognosis is terminal. The cancer has now metastasized to her liver and due to the rapid decline in her health, Slemp’s court hearing has been pushed forward.

“It’s a dire case all the way around,” says a spokesperson for talcumpowder.org. “Mrs. Slemp is terminal which is why they have rushed the case into court.”

The pharmaceutical company that manufactured the popular Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower is now facing more than 3,000 similar lawsuits where plaintiffs all claim that their long term use of talc based products has led to the development of ovarian cancer. Arguments for the plaintiffs include studies that date back to the early 1970’s that show a link between talc and ovarian cancer, as well as company documents from Johnson & Johnson that show the pharmaceutical company has known of the risks involved in using talc on the genital area but hid that knowledge and continued to manufacture and market the products to women.

In three previous cases where Johnson & Johnson was held liable, the courts awarded settlements of more than $50 million to each claimant. Slemp’s case was chosen as the next trial by Johnson & Johnson. Missouri law allows each side to take turns when selecting which lawsuit will next be heard. Due to Slemp’s declining health, her case was chosen to be advanced.

“This is far from over,” says the representative for talcumpowder.org. “There are cases popping up all over the country.”

In addition to Missouri and Louisiana, cases are set to begin trial soon in Delaware, New Jersey, and California. The first California trial is scheduled to begin in May. This is another case where preference has been granted due to the plaintiff’s terminal stage of cancer.
