Filings Of Xarelto Lawsuits For The Philadelphia Mass Tort Grouping Increase
January 12, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on lawsuit numbers involved in a mass tort group from Philadelphia, PA which commonly discuss blood-thinning drug Xarelto and are filed against Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The cases filed in the group continue to grow, and currently number around 550. Litigation surrounding the cases is in pretrial and discovery stages, and those involved seem to expect that in the meantime, this number will only continue to grow. Additionally, these lawsuits are joined by another 2,800+ cases which have been consolidated to form multidistrict litigation number 2592 in Louisiana.
The Philadelphia mass tort group was consolidated by the Court Of Common Pleas. All lawsuits involved contain similar allegations claiming that Xarelto can cause dangerous and sometimes fatal uncontrollable bleeding episodes. Additionally, plaintiffs state that manufacturers were reckless and negligent to release the anticoagulant to market without any corresponding antidote.
Xarelto’s lack of antidote means that if a patient with the drug in their system suffers from a bleeding injury, that bleed can easily become uncontrollable, as there is no way to counter the effects of the blood thinner and get their blood to clot. In these situations, doctors must resort to extreme life-saving measures such as blood transfusions or surgery.
Traditional blood thinners are unlike Xarelto in this way. They were released to market with a corresponding antidote in vitamin K. This antidote means that those taking traditional blood thinners typically have to follow a specific diet. However, if someone with these blood thinners in their system is injured and bleeding, vitamin K can counter the effects of the medication and clot their blood. In emergency situations involving internal and external bleeds, this antidote can easily mean the difference between a patient’s life or death.
Lawsuits included in the Philadelphia mass tort group cite internal bleeding and wrongful death. The plaintiffs involved seek compensation for damages to cover large medical bills, lost wages, or, in some cases, funeral expenses. They are anticipated to continue to increase in number as they await trial.
Today, Attorney Joseph Osborne is working to ensure that everyone negatively affected by Xarelto can have the opportunity to explore their legal rights.
