On September 23, the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts will host The Second Annual Space Coast Public Service Awards & Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Among those being honored that night will be long time Brevard County Sherriff’s Deputy and former Interim Sheriff, Vernon Weekley.

Over the course of his law enforcement career, Vernon served with the Glendale Arizona Police Department, Village of Biscayne Park Police Department and North Miami Beach Police Departments but spent his last 27 years of service with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

In that time he served in many positions including Uniform Patrol Deputy, was a General Crimes Agent and K-9 Deputy and rose through the ranks serving as a Sergeant, Lieutenant, Shift Commander and Interim Sheriff during Sheriff Zimmerma’s Administration.

His many accomplishments with the force include being the driving force behind the formation of the Selective Enforcement Unit. Focusing primarily on traffic violations, this motorcycle unit was tasked with providing a strong law enforcement presence on local roads, in residential communities and in school zones.

Another of his undertakings was developing the plan, finding the funding for and deploying the county’s first “BAT Mobile.” These Breath Alcohol Testing Command Posts were the first in the area and provided a much-needed service to both the Sheriff’s Department and other local law enforcement agencies. It enabled motor officers and other units to test drivers for intoxication without the need to call for transport or the driver taken in for testing.

As sterling a law enforcement career as Vernon accomplished, his service to the community was in no way limited to his time in uniform. Among other activities, he spent 15 years serving as a Board Member of the Brevard Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). He was a committee member of the AAU Junior Olympic Games in 1994, was a lifetime member of the local Veteran’s Council, coached in the Merritt Island Little League program and was a charter member of the Brevard County Chapter of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA).

In the local motorcycle community, he is best known as for his time spent as a leader in the Brevard County Chapter of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, an international non-profit organization made up of motor officers and other motorcycle enthusiasts who work or retired from working in law enforcement and are dedicated to community service.

Local motorcycle devotee and Melbourne personal injury attorney Brad Sinclair had this to say about Deputy Weekley. “I have known Vernon for quite a few years and have nothing but respect for the man. He is a regular fixture at the Annual Christmas Toy Run and other charity riding events in the area. He always has a smile and kind word for everyone and goes out of his way to help other riders. I’m very happy to see him receiving the recognition that he deserves.”

Seating is limited for the September 23 event. If you would like to attend, contact the King Center for ticket information.
