Following FDA Safety Warning, Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Discuss Alleged Dangerous Side Effects Of Drug

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the multiple lawsuits which have been filed in reference to type 2 diabetes drug, Invokana against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Several lawsuits allege that the drug caused plaintiffs to suffer serious side effects such as ketoacidosis which can prove to be a life-threatening condition.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious condition in which a surplus of acidic toxins are retained in the bloodstream and not excreted. It can develop in as little as 24-hours and result in comatose states or death if untreated or undiagnosed.

One of the initial lawsuits filed in the U.S. against Invokana manufacturers took place on December 15th, 2015. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama under case number 1:15-cv-00636. Details in court documents indicate that the plaintiff involved began to take Invokana in December of 2014 until the alarming onset of diabetic ketoacidosis shortly thereafter.

A strikingly similar lawsuit was filed just days prior on December 10th, 2015. This suit is filed under case number 15-12-00653 in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Details of this suit note that the plaintiff reported commencing the use of Invokana in November 2014 and ceased using the drug when only 3 months later he was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis.

Diabetic ketoacidosis allegedly linked to Invokana ingestion was the subject of a recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration safety communication. The FDA has also mandated Invokana manufacturer, Janssen to make adjustments to the drug’s warning label which clearly warn patients of the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis as well as urinary tract infections. The agency has warned those taking the drug to monitor for any signs of the development of diabetic ketoacidosis and seek medical attention. Onset symptoms include nausea and vomiting, laboured breathing, excess fatigue, and abdominal pain.
