In 2014, the 500 largest companies around the globe had a combined revenue of $31.2 trillion. Their profits reached $1.7 trillion. Additionally, these companies are the places of employment for some 65 million people around the globe. The 500 biggest companies are spread out across 36 different countries. Fortune500s has made it their mission to review each of these companies and to provide information that people want to find out about them in one place.

The list is compiled by the Fortune Magazine, which also looks at the wealth of various individuals. The first list was published in 1955, and it has been updated every year since. While the top few spots have been pretty consistent and include such companies as Walmart, Sinopec Group and Royal Dutch Shell (the top three companies this year), other spots are not necessary a given and there tends to be some fluctuation in which companies are and are not included on the list.

Through the new Fortune500s website, people can learn more about each of the companies. This will also help them understand why a certain company may have been able to get on the list one year, but not in a subsequent year. Petersson says that learning from the best, and the Fortune 500 companies truly are the best, is a fantastic way for others to try and improve themselves, their products and their services.
