American Mussar solicits nominations for outstanding local philanthropies to receive a Point of Light Award for 2016

SAN CARLOS, CA – 12/10/2015 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — To help bring attention to the original meaning of Hanukkah, and to encourage people to rededicate themselves to building community, AmericanMussar.com is recognizing local philanthropies as Points of Light for 2016. Each Point of Light recipient will receive a donation, and be in a blog post, and be highlighted throughout 2016 on AmericanMussar.com. Award winners will receive a donation, be profiled in an article, and will be highlighted throughout 2016 on AmericanMussar.com. Anyone can nominate their favorite local charity on American Mussar Facebook page, or on AmericanMussar.com. Winners will be chosen in part based on the number of likes and comments each nomination gets, as well as the impact of the charity on their local community. Nominations will be open through Sundown on Monday December 14 2015, the last day of Hanukkah.

In an age when many people think of Hanukkah as the Jewish Christmas, the real meaning of Hanukkah gets lost. Hanukkah means rededication. The holiday is an eight day festival that commemorates the rededication of the ancient Temple which was the centerpiece of the ancient Jewish community. The candles remind us of the light that resides within every person, and we have the opportunity every day to help others.

American Mussar is a 21st century Jewish spiritual practice for an authentic and meaningful life. It teaches how to find those things inside that cause us to get stuck in the same situation again and again, and offers a step-by-step path towards balance. “Mussar is all about taking small actions to become better people, ” explains Greg Marcus, the founder of AmericanMussar.com. “Here, we are giving people an opportunity to take a simple action to help their own community. All they need to do is go to AmericanMussar.com or the American Mussar Facebook page, and paste the link of a worthy local philanthropy. We’ll vet all of the choices, and then pick one worthy organization for each night of Hanukkah.”

While American Mussar is a Jewish practice, it is accessible to everyone because it doesn’t use any Hebrew or require membership in an organization. “The best way to learn about Mussar is to try it,” explains Marcus. “We offer a free four week challenge to try and see how a few small changes can transform your life.” As a first step, we suggest taking a moment to nominate your favorite local philanthropy to help us strengthen your community.” Mussar teaches that action you take leave a small impression on your soul, and by mindfully taking good actions, you make yourself a better person.
