China dominates in the global chestnut trade. In 2014, China exported 36 thousand tonnes of chestnut totaling 83 million USD, 2% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Thailand, where it supplied 19% of its total chestnut exports in value terms, accounting for the lion’s share of Thailand’s total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, China was a net exporter of chestnut. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms the difference was at the same level.

Italy and Portugal were among the other main global suppliers of chestnut in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Greece (+80% per year) and Albania (+64% per year). Portugal significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.

In 2014, China’s top 5 trading partners were Thailand, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and the Republic of Korea, with a combined 51% share of China’s chestnut exports. The share of Thailand increased significantly (+15 percentage points), while the share of Japan dramatically dropped (-23 percentage points).
