The results of the latest survey of the Pew Research Center’s American Trends Panel have just been released, and they deliver interesting information about the relationship between adult Americans and social media when it comes to gathering news. The core statistic is that social media is now used as a news source for 62 percent of US individuals.

Leaders in the percentage of users gathering news from given sites include reddit (70 percent), Facebook (66 percent), and Twitter (59 percent). Combining the penetration of different sites together with their use as news sources produces some different relationships. The ranking of social media platforms remained unchanged, and every platform increased its percentage of news-sensitive users. The biggest leaps were Facebook, going from 47 to 66 percent, and Instagram, which went from 13 to 23 percent. The most notable fact might be YouTube’s performance or lack thereof. In three years the video sharing site’s percentage of users relying on the platform for news has risen by just a single percentage point.
