Green Heart Lifestyle Releases New Tips on Making Garden Pruning Shears Last Longer

August 28, 2017 – – Green Hearts Lifestyle, the Niagara Falls, NY based gardening tools manufacturer has released new tips on maintaining pruning scissors as a part of their 2017 awareness campaign on gardening and garden tools.

Garden pruning shears are versatile tools, but also notorious for the amount of care they need. Aad Hermann, President of Green Heart Lifestyle says “We at Green Heart are committed to creating the best products with utmost care and guarantee of quality. However, proper maintenance of these tools is an essential step in making them last longer.”

Hermann says it is important to wash garden pruners after every use. Pruning plants and shrubs can leave a lot of sap and plant debris stuck to the blades of the pruners. An accumulation of this can make it harder to prune plants and can also damage the blades in the long run. The best way to wash garden pruners is to rinse them in warm soapy water. Care should be taken to dry them completely, otherwise, there are chances of rust. Fine steel wool can also be used to clean out sap.

The space between the blade and the hook should be oiled with light mineral oil or even vegetable oil, adds Hermann. Oiling the spring is also a good step. One should sharpen the blade when cutting starts taking an effort. By using a sharpening stone or diamond hand file, one can draw it along the length of the blade and stroke it along the factory bevel angle.

The tension of the blades should be adjusted when the cuts are no longer sharp and clean. If the blades are too loose, the pruner will bind on larger branches; if the blades are too tight, then extra force is needed to make the cut. One can do this by adjusting the central screw or bow and aligning it as per one’s needs.
