The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports motorcycle fatalities decreased 2.3 percent in 2014, yet 4,586 individuals lost their life during a traffic crash. One reason for this decline, the agency reports, involves the increased use of DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets, and more individuals are turning to these safety devices. Although any decline in fatalities is appreciated, additional work needs to be done to protect motorcyclists out on the road, as the injuries sustained in this type of accident tend to be severe.

“The agency goes on to report that more than 500 of these riders die in a motorcycle accident in Florida each year in Florida. That’s a high percentage when look at in context, as that accounts for approximately 11 percent of all motorcycle fatalities nationwide. Not every incident involving a motorcycle results in a fatality, yet even minor crashes often lead to bruises, back pain, road rash and more. For this reason, every person on the road needs to ensure they are watching for motorcyclists at all times,” Raymond Gonzalez, spokesperson for Harrington Law Group Personal Injury Attorneys, advocates.

Head-on collisions account for the majority of motorcycle crashes, with 78 percent of accidents being of this type. Sadly, this type of accident also tends to be the most fatal. In fact, motorcycles are only rear-ended five percent of the time. Other drivers need to be aware of motorcyclists on the road, regardless of other conditions. This doesn’t mean, however, that the motorcyclist doesn’t need to be a responsible driver also, however.

“Motorcyclists must take care at all times to ensure they are obeying traffic laws. They must also be aware of other drivers and take preventative measures whenever possible. This is true regardless of what type of vehicle a person is operating. The main difference between car and motorcycle accidents is the injuries sustained,” Gonzalez continues.

As the entire body is exposed when a person is on a motorcycle, the injuries sustained tend to be more severe and often more widespread. Increased use of motorcycle helmets has helped to reduce head and neck injuries, yet only 64 percent of motorcyclists make use of them, as of 2015. As more individuals become aware of the dangers of motorcycles, hopefully this number will increase even more.

“Many people call on an Auto Accident Attorney when they actually need a Motorcycle Accident Attorney. Due to the nature and extent of the injuries often sustained, the victim needs to ensure their lawyer understands the nuances of the law and how they apply in a case. In addition, a motorcycle accident attorney often has an extensive network of professionals to call on, all with experience with this type of case. We here at Harrington Law Group have this network and can assist you in obtaining compensation for your injuries. Give us a call today,” Gonzalez recommends.
