Lancaster, CA – March 1, 2021

High Desert Medical College (HDMC) has announced it is now offering a new Associate of Applied Science, Vocational Nursing program (VNAAS), designed to be completed in less than 2 years.  With locations in Lancaster, Bakersfield, and Temecula, California, programs at HDMC are designed to offer career training for in-demand, essential healthcare careers. The new AAS degree program for Vocational Nurses will add to HDMC’s profile of programs that cater to students motivated to enter the healthcare field.

HDMC’s Vice President of Nursing, Michelle Welch, DPN, MSN, MBAHCM, RN, said of the new program, “We are excited to offer the VNAAS program to HDMC LVN graduates, as well as any VN graduate who wants to improve their nursing career. Nurses are critical to the needs of our communities, and there is an increasing demand for educated professionals. HDMC is doing our part to train nurses to contribute at a more advanced level.”

The VNAAS program is designed for graduates of an approved Vocational Nursing program, such as HDMC’s Vocational Nursing diploma program, who want to strengthen their careers in the nursing field. Through the AAS degree program, vocational nursing students develop enhanced critical thinking skills, greater scientific knowledge, and quality verbal/written communication skills, becoming more well-rounded professionals and more qualified job candidates.

The AAS degree program builds on the Vocational Nursing diploma by adding General Education and science courses, including an Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Human Anatomy, Microbiology, and Human Physiology. These General Education and science courses are offered online and are required to enter a Registered Nursing Program. The AAS portion of the program is 48 weeks in length.

The Licensed Vocational Nursing portion of the program is 56 weeks long, for a total VNAAS program length of 104 weeks. In the LVN program, students learn the basic skills and essential functions of vocational nursing. Courses include the Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Medical-Surgical Mental Health, Maternal – Child Health Leadership, and Clinical in Various Facilities. The nursing program includes a combination of classroom study and clinical practice in a hospital or other healthcare setting, so students gain theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.

High Desert Medical College’s LVN program is approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. HDMC is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) and is licensed by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Accreditation and approval guarantee students, faculty and the public that the programs at HDMC meet objective and rigorous third-party standards of educational practices.

High Desert Medical College offers hybrid, hands-on, and online classes to train students for important medical careers in a short amount of time. Hands-on training from industry professional faculty prepares students for success in their chosen healthcare careers upon graduation.
