Headbands of Hope offers a free headband to a child with cancer for each purchased headband. Since October of 2012, the online organization has reached every children’s hospital in the United States with donations of headbands. The founder used her experience as an intern in a wish-granting organization during college as the start of the dream to create Headbands of Hope while still in college. She learned that girls loved to wear headbands after losing their hair to chemotherapy. Fashion is stated as the greatest vehicle to a positive self-identity.

According to Jess Ekstrom, Headbands of Hope founder, “In June of 2015, we celebrated donations to every children’s hospital in the United States. The more we got involved, the more we discovered amazing childhood cancer organizations doing wonderful work that we wanted to be a part of.”

As a result of the initial donations, in September, 2015, Headbands of Hope launched The Hope Market. The new organization is filled with many accessories which benefit a different childhood cancer charity each month. The Hope Market offers many adorable accessories, including necklaces, shirts, and hair ties. Each purchase at the Market benefits a different childhood cancer charity every month. These are called Monthly Missions.

Headbands to donate are delivered to the hospital or childhood cancer foundation. Boys can receive goodies as well from Headbands of Hope. Buffs are donated for boys. The organization is a retail one, rather than a non-profit, but their donations to girls and boys help to get through a difficult period when hair has been lost due to treatments for cancer.

The selection of items for sale is more than just headbands and buffs. There is jewelry, shirts, and bumper stickers, each of which is part of the planned giving schedule set out by The Hope Market. Direct donations for headbands are also accepted.
