Hearing Loss Due To Usher Syndrome Treated At Happy Ears Hearing Center

August 17, 2018 – – Happy Ears Hearing Center, a hearing clinic in Peoria, AZ, is proud to announce that they are able to treat hearing loss associated with Usher Syndrome. With a son who has had a profound hearing loss since birth, Dr. Shanna Dewsnup was able to see the signs that her son Brenden had the symptoms of Usher Syndrome because of her medical training as an audiologist. Even though this was devastating news, a positive outlook toward the future and an overall “I can still do anything” mindset from Brenden brightened their lives. He has all the tools to be an extremely influential and positive role model for others with similar disabilities to follow. Brenden Sorensen says: “The path ahead may seem foggy and blurred, but it’s still there. There’s always a way.”

Usher Syndrome is a rare inherited condition that affects only around 25,000 people in this country. Before Dr. Shanna Dewsnup’s son was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome, she decided to obtain a doctorate in audiology to better understand his hearing loss condition and help those who suffer from it. In her doctoral program, she learned how Usher Syndrome is related to some individuals with hearing loss. Not only do these individuals have a hearing loss they also lose their eyesight.

Usher Syndrome must be passed down to the child by both parents, which is why it is so rare. It was only Brenden who developed the condition. Dr. Dewsnup’s other son, Ian, was able to avoid developing the syndrome but is a carrier. Brenden’s tenacity and positive outlook on life have inspired his mother to found Happy Ears Hearing Center and to deliver services to the community to help them learn about and treat their hearing loss. At the same time, she is working tirelessly to find a solution through advances in hearing and sight technology, while also being an educational resource for other families affected by the condition.

There are many different types of hearing loss and many different causes as well. This is why Happy Ears Hearing Center provides people with a wealth of information so that they can recognize the symptoms of hearing loss and take action when necessary. Unfortunately, it is quite common for people to be unaware of the fact that they are experiencing hearing loss. It is usually friends or family members who first start to notice that there are some communication problems.

Hearing loss in all age groups has the potential to lead to social isolation and depression. It affects people’s social life and relationships. As a result, Dr. Dewsnup is committed to making sure that people learn to recognize the symptoms and make an appointment for a consultation if they notice any. They include having trouble hearing in groups, muffled hearing, finding it hard to understand people when there is background noise, not being able to hear someone who is behind, needing to turn the radio and television louder, struggling with telephone conversations, not hearing an alarm clock or movies, requesting people to speak slowly, staring at people when they are speaking to read their lips, feeling tired at the end of the day due to the effort of listening, social avoidance, bluffing about being able to hear, struggling to hear consonants, and tinnitus.

For Dr. Shanna Dewsnup, her son is the perfect example of how it is possible to live a happy life even with significant disabilities. She has been heartened to see that there have been amazing developments in hearing aid technology and particularly cochlear implants. At the same time, she has learned about the power of positivity from Brenden, amazed every day at how someone who has faced so much, can still have such a zest for life.

Brenden’s inspiration lies at the heart of everything that is done by Happy Ears Hearing Center. They are one of the few hearing centers in the country that offer treatment to those who suffer from Usher Syndrome. Since Brenden’s diagnosis, Dr. Shanna Dewsnup has become aware of the lack of knowledge about this condition, which is mainly due to it being a very rare condition. She aims to change that through the hearing center, while at the same time providing assistance to those with other forms of hearing problems and hearing loss. The services offered by Happy Ears Hearing Center are extensive and include strong educational research that teaches people how to lead a happy life, helping them to increase their confidence and their overall quality of life.

Brenden, meanwhile, continues to do well and continues to be an inspiration for many.
