Hematomas: A Look At One Of The Side Effects Cited In Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit Filings

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a side effect cited in several transvaginal mesh lawsuits. Hematomas have been cited in some lawsuits by women who have claimed that transvaginal mesh severely altered their quality of life. Hematomas are defined as “a collection of blood, usually clotted, outside of a blood vessel that may occur because of an injury to the wall of a blood vessel allowing blood to leak out into tissues where it does not belong,” according to emedicinehealth.com.

Hematomas are most commonly caused by trauma to the blood vessels. They can range in severity from small hematomas under a nail to more serious hematomas that result from a fall or invasive surgery. They are usually identified by pain, swelling and redness but can also be accompanied by no symptoms at all. Hematomas inside the abdominal cavity can sometimes expand significantly in size before ever developing noticeable symptoms.

Hematomas are one of several side effects alleged by transvaginal mesh lawsuit plaintiffs. Women have filed suits against manufacturers including C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, Cook Medical and Coloplast Corp, alleging that not only do the devices cause serious complications but also that the companies were negligent in informing patients and healthcare professionals about the potential risks of using the mesh.

The FDA cleared transvaginal mesh in 1996 to be used for supporting the urethra in procedures to treat stress urinary incontinence. In 2002, the devices were approved to treat pelvic organ prolapse. Warnings were issued for the device while more than 1,000 adverse events were reported in 2008. The devices were recently reclassified by the FDA from “moderate risk” to “high risk.”

Side effects women have claimed to suffer from the devices include organ perforation, inability to engage in sexual intercourse, severe vaginal or pelvic pain, bleeding, infections, vaginal scarring, erosion of mesh through the vagina, recurrent incontinence or prolapse, need for revision surgery, vaginal shrinkage, nerve damage, urinary tract infections, fistulas and autoimmune problems.

Attorneys at Banville Law are currently working to make sure that those who believe they have suffered negative side effects due to a transvaginal mesh implant are able to investigate their legal rights fully. Qualifying individuals may be entitled to legal action and financial compensation. Banville Law is currently offering free case evaluations for those parties.
