Holiday Helpers For The Immunocompromised

August 31, 2015 – – Zombiedisasterkits.com, LLC, an online business located in Washington State, has just announced their interest and support in helping immunocompromised individuals stay well through the upcoming cold and flu season and especially the plethora of holidays beginning now until the end of Chinese New Year.

“Holidays are big for exchanging gifts but especially for giving or sending flowers.” Says Jillian Gregg, spokesperson for the My BioDefense UV-C Sanitizing wand and one of Zombiedisasterkits’s staff members. “However, anyone with an immunocompromised system should take special precautions to prevent contracting illnesses from microorganisms that are hosted in those beautiful bouquets.”

From an Article in the Saudi Journal of Kidney Diseases and Transplantation the importance of this risk was highlighted:

“Fresh flowers and other plants can carry microorganisms that are pathogenic for the immunocompromised patient. A study showed that flowers and related items were colonized by over 40 different species of bacteria. OverĀall, 90% of the isolated organisms were known as causative agents of infection. The authors recommended that:

i) Ban flowers in high-risk areas, such as cancer wards and burn units.

ii) Designate handling of flowers to support staff with no patient contact.

iii) Hand washing after contact with plant materials

iv) Change vase water at least every 48 hours

v) Dispose vase water into designated sinks.”

This article makes choosing gifts other than flowers the better option for any friends or family members that might have compromised immune systems, whether from cancer treatment or acute allergy or respiratory issues.

Zombiedisasteerkits urges the use of one very effective way to eliminate the possibility of infection from gift bouquets and that is to use UV-C light to sterilize the stems where they’ve been sitting and traveling in water. Dispose of the water the flowers arrive in and continue to change the water often. You can eradicate up to 99.9% of the disease-causing microorganisms within just a few seconds of exposing the stems to UV-C light.

In order to help combat the complicated subject of microorganisms and how long they should be exposed to UV-C light for adequate sanitizing, for a limited time, Zombiedisasterkits is making available the My BioDefense App for either the iPhone or Android, free, at either of the respective stores online.
