Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region (www.HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on the benefits of the Cognitive Therapeutics Method (CTM) for treating mental decline in seniors.

CTM is a science-based, non-pharmaceutical, cognitive stimulation program for seniors that can be administered in a home environment. In the past year, Home Care Assistance Toronto/York Region has implemented the program and has been treating patients both one-on-one and in a group setting. A recent case study showed rapid cognitive improvement in a 77-year-old stroke sufferer following a few weeks of treatment using CTM.

“Cognitive decline is one of the top issues facing seniors today, and CTM is one tool that can be an effective treatment for slowing or reversing this problem,” says Brian Shevel, President of Home Care Assistance.

Shevel references a case involving an educated 77-year-old man with a PhD in Philosophy. The man had suffered from a stroke two years prior to beginning CTM. He had residual cognitive issues, including cognitive executive function impairment, balance and coordination issues, and language and speech difficulties. At his urging, Home Care Assistance administered CTM aggressively as part of his homecare protocol.

“The results after just a few weeks of CTM have shown rapid improvement in the client,” says Shevel. “His family and care provider have noted improvements in every domain of his cognitive functioning.”

The client saw improvement in memory, attention and concentration, as well as visual spatial relationships. Most importantly for this client, there was a significant improvement with both his speech and language issues. Shevel notes that the client can now have extended conversations, speaking spontaneously and confidently, and he has seen a return of his reading and writing ability.

“What this case study shows is that the multifaceted approach of CTM can be effective for a wide range of cognitive impairments,” says Shevel. “The client and his family have been overjoyed with the results. For the first time in a long time, he reports feeling a greater sense of wellbeing and happiness, and his frustration has dissipated.”

Shevel anticipates that the client will continue to progress at a rapid rate of improvement over the next few months of treatment, and sees CTM as becoming an increasingly integral part of many senior’s homecare protocols.

“The results of this case study have shown that effective one-on-one treatment can be provided in a senior’s home with minimal impact on their lifestyle,” concludes Shevel. “Given the impressive results we have seen, Home Care Assistance will continue to use CTM to help seniors overcome and prevent cognitive decline.”
