Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region reacts to a study regarding doctors in Ontario.

A study conducted by Health Quality Ontario found that only 29% of doctors in the province communicate with patients once they have made the move to home care. This is one of the lowest percentage of all the provinces in Canada and across the developed world. “It’s difficult to see Ontario performing this poorly when it comes to creating doors of communication between doctors and patients who are receiving home care,” says Brian Shevel, president of Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region. “If there is any hope of making an effective transition to an improved health care system, then better communication with home care patients is an essential part of the process.”
The report also noted that barriers presented by the system do, in fact, make communication difficult. More specifically, patients often go through several different settings during their care, and not properly monitoring these settings leads to breakdowns along the way.
“A single patient could have seen a family doctor at their office, as well as been in the hospital ward, an emergency room, and a rehab centre,” Shevel explains. “Not communicating effectively at each step lessens the possibility of effective treatment.”
“However, there were some positives in the report, including 90% of Ontario doctors admitting they receive reports from specialists,” Shevel concludes. “Also, doctors said that only 25% of procedures from family physicians had to be repeated because of results not being available.”
