Illinois Car Fire Caused By E-Cigarette Explosion, As E-Cig Lawsuit Numbers Increase

July 23, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the first e-cig explosion to occur in the state of Illinois as per a news story by WGNTV.com, a local Chicago news outlet. WGNTV.com reported that local firefighting officials responded to a fire in a Wal-Mart parking lot where they found two cars ablaze. Firefighters stated that the cause of the fire was very likely an e-cigarette that ignited in a Chevy Trailblazer. Before firefighters arrived, the blaze had spread to another parked automobile. Both vehicles sustained significant damage. After the fire was extinguished and an investigation conducted, a charred e-cig was found in the center console, which strengthened the belief made by local officials that the fire was started by the device.

Attorney Marc Freund of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus, & Moverman commented on the late April fire stating that he is glad the owner of the vehicle is safe from injury. In other cases, victims have been significantly injured when their e-cigs exploded and caught fire. Typical injuries can include severe burns, cuts, lacerations, and in some cases, victims have sustained impaired vision, temporary blindness, and or mutilated limbs.

As previously stated, this e-cig explosion is the first instance to occur the state of Illinois. It is one of the 77 that have happened this year already. The total number of explosions in 2016 already exceeds the totals from 2014 and 2015, 47 and 38, respectively. Since the rate of explosions has increased so dramatically, it has caused some consumers to begin to question not only the use of the devices but the safety of the chargers and the lithium-ion batteries used to power and charge their e-cigs.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reported that the lithium-ion batteries in most explosions have been the cause of the incident. The devices can overheat due to an overload of voltage, thus causing the explosions.
