In a related update, Facebook has been testing a new feature on it’s mobile users that allows for more control over their news feed, over riding the algorithm so they see feeds from their preferred pages and friends at the top of their News Feed. The feature has appeared for a percentage of mobile users, offering them the option to “see what they love” by selecting pages and friends to prioritize. The portal leads to a screen that allows a user to select the individuals and pages they want to prioritize.

If implemented this will be a massive departure from Facebook’s usual form of operation, where the news feed has traditionally been formatted based on user patterns, in other words they see what they actually interact with, not what they say they are interested in. This new feature allowing people to choose what they see will have many possible ramifications, including giving pages the ability to once more reach larger numbers of their members than has been possible recently.

This could very likely give marketers another in to the coveted news feed, as users can choose to prioritize their page and see their posts. This would be a huge boon for businesses as many have grown frustrated with recent algorithm changes that have resulted in a steep drop in the organic reach of posts from pages. Although opting-in for notifications is possible, being on the News Feed would be much more effective.

This recent update does present a further challenge for businesses who now have to convince users to add them to prioritize their page in order to see their posts. While this might be easy for major media companies, smaller business pages will have to focus their energies on creating fostering a relationship with their clients, and creating engaging content. Pages with a loyal fan base stand to gain the most from this possible change.

As Facebook tests what could be a major change in the way the news feed is populated, many marketers are at the edge of their seats, hoping to once again be able to increase their organic reach via posts on the news feed. If implemented this will be a major change for Facebook, allowing users to prioritize what they would like to see, rather than what Facebook thinks they want to see, opening a new market for many business pages.
