In Midst of Xarelto Lawsuit Filings New Study Finds Increased Risk of Brain Bleeds from Use of Warfarin
March 31, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on the new study published in HealthyDay News suggesting Warfarin may raise the risk of severe bleeding inside the skull. Nearly 32,000 U.S. veterans, age 75 and over, with atrial fibrillation were observed in the study by researchers. Those researchers found that one out of three of those subjects suffered an intracranial bleed while taking the blood thinning drug Warfarin for their heart condition.
The study’s results emerge amid thousands of pending cases against another blood thinning drug, Xarelto, which is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and Bayer. Xarelto was compared to Warfarin in a double-blind trial and found to be the more effective of the two drugs. However, a recent New York Times article stated that the FDA is now investigating whether faulty equipment compromised the outcome. Since the clinical trial, thousands of lawsuits have emerged against the manufacturers of Xarelto claiming the patients that used the drug suffered adverse side effects including gastrointestinal bleeding, brain hemorrhages, internal bleeding, rectal bleeding, pulmonary embolisms, epidural hematoma, stroke and heart attacks.
Federal cases filed against the manufacturers of Xarelto have been combined into a multidistrict litigation panel in New Orleans, Louisiana. Those filed in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania have been assigned to a mass tort program for more efficient managing. Federal cases have since reached almost 3,000 in number and those filed in Pennsylvania have reached 620 cases.
The first lawsuit filed against Xarelto claiming the drug was the reason for a patient’s death was filed in January 2014. At that time there was no corresponding antidote for the drug which means that extreme measures had to be taken in emergency bleeding situations. .
For those still waiting for their day in court, Attorney Joseph Osborne is working to help ensure that anyone who has taken Xarelto and believes they have experienced negative side effects as a result of the drug will be given the chance to investigate their legal rights. Qualifying individuals could be entitled to legal action and significant compensation. Attorney Osborne is offering complimentary legal consultations to affected parties at this time.
