Invokana Lawsuit: Drug Users Observe Potential Link To Kidney Failure & UTI’s
April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on reports which indicate that the new-generation diabetes drug, Invokana has been linked to serious renal system problems. A number of adverse event reports were submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by patients currently using the drug. It was noted that in 50 of these adverse event reports received by the FDA, affected patients claimed development of renal impairment and even kidney failure. Alarmingly, these reports were made within the drug’s first year of release to the public market.
Invokana gained FDA approval and was subsequently released for usage in 2013 in the treatment of type-2 diabetes patients. The implicated drug assists patients in the management of their glucose (blood sugar) levels. Invokana achieves this by blocking the kidneys from reabsorbing excess blood sugar in the body which is instead, excreted during urination.
The drug was released to market as the first of a group of drugs classed as SGLT2 inhibitors. This abbreviation stands for sodium-glucose co-transporter-2. The additional strain allegedly placed by the action of Invokana upon the kidneys carries an increased potential for kidney stress and resultant damage. Due to their condition, diabetic patients are prone to kidney problems. Patients with pre-existing kidney problems may be at greater risk of enduring additional damage to these vital organs.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a public safety warning on December 4, 2015, announcing that they were requiring label warning adjustments for Invokana. These changes would be made by Invokana manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which is a division of well-known Johnson & Johnson corporation. At this time, the FDA noted that they had received 19 adverse event reports from patients who claimed to have developed life-threatening complications after taking the drug.
