Invokana Lawsuit Information Alleges Drug Is Linked To Several Types Of Serious Infections

February 09, 2016 – – Tracey & Fox reports on product safety warnings issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concerning diabetes drug Invokana and a link to the development of potentially life-threatening urinary tract infections, kidney infections, and blood infections. In addition, new FDA product labeling has connected the drug to a serious condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis.

Invokana was approved to treat type-2 diabetes patients. The drug assists in controlling blood sugar by releasing glucose through urination, helping patients to lower their blood sugar levels. In doing so, however, the extra sugar being released can encourage the growth of additional bacteria and therefore encourage the development of urinary tract infections which can be severe. Because Invokana depends so much on the kidneys, it can cause bladder and kidney infections as well.

The development of these conditions in patients taking Invokana prompted an updated warning label for the drug, which was issued by the FDA on December 4th of 2015. The FDA noted that they had received numerous reports of patients who had become hospitalized after taking the drug due to kidney infections and blood infections, both of which began as urinary tract infections. Several patients reported that the infections were so severe they caused kidney failure and required them to stay in the ICU and undergo dialysis.

Patients using Invokana, both men and women, most commonly report yeast infections as a side effect. These infections can cause a lot of pain, and appeared to affect about 10% of women and 8% of men involved in clinical trials of the drug. Reports of yeast infections as a side effect are followed closely by urinary tract infections and then blood and kidney infections. Infections of the blood are one of the most severe complications that can follow urinary tract infections.

As these occurrences are being reported by Invokana patients, the FDA is monitoring things closely. At this time, the attorneys at Tracey & Fox are working to help those who may have been negatively affected after using Invokana. They sponsor the resource website TheProductLawyers.com and are also currently offering those who have used the drug and experienced negative side effects free legal consultations.
