Invokana Lawsuit News: Diabetes Drug Alleged Side Effects Stated To Cause Kidney Damage and Even Kidney Failure in Patients

May 02, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The plaintiff in this case alleges that diabetes drug Invokana can cause kidney damage and even kidney failure in patients using the drug. Reports provided to the FDA indicate that there have been 50 cases of patients who, after taking Invokana, developed kidney failure and renal impairment within one year of the drug’s release to market.

Invokana is a type of new-generation type-2 diabetes drug known as an SGLT2 inhibitor. These drugs are designed to reduce the amount of glucose that is absorbed into the body, therefore reducing the dependence of the patient on insulin. The drugs do this by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing excess glucose and instead ridding the body of this additional sugar via urination. Due to the method in which Invokana and other SGLT2 class inhibitors like it work, additional stress is placed on the kidneys. This added stress can cause damage especially if a patient already has a pre-existing kidney condition.

Any excess strain on the kidneys can result in kidney damage and once damaged there is no repair process available. Excessive kidney damage can result in kidney failure, which requires dialysis as well as a kidney transplant.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
