Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges Drug Caused Potentially Life-Threatening Ketoacidosis Condition
April 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit which was filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and the manufacturer of new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana. The complaint was filed in the Southern District Of Alabama under case number 1:15-cv-00636 by a plaintiff who alleges that her use of the drug caused her development of a potentially life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition which develops when the body’s bloodstream contains a surplus of toxic acid or ketones. The condition has been noted to arise in as little as 24 hours, and can cause patients to become comatose or pass away if they remain untreated.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently discussed this possible side effect link, after receiving multiple adverse event reports indicating that patients using Invokana had developed the condition. They are now asking patients taking Invokana or other similar SGLT2 class inhibitor drugs to be extra aware of possible signs of the development of diabetic ketoacidosis. The Mayo Clinic states that these signs can include, “excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, fruity-scented breath, and confusion.” The FDA has also required that Invokana manufacturer Janssen change the warning label on the drug to better reflect this potential link.
Further details of this particular lawsuit show that the plaintiff claims that she began to take Invokana in December of 2014, and, that shortly after this, she developed a diabetic ketoacidosis condition. She states that she was never made aware of the possible side effect of developing this condition while taking the drug. She says that defendant Janssen Pharmaceuticals (Johnson & Johnson) acted with negligence by neglecting to properly address these potential side effects to current and potential patients.
