Invokana Lawsuit: Plaintiff Alleges Side Effects Caused Her to Develop Ketoacidosis, a Potentially Deadly Condition

May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on a pending lawsuit (case number 1:15-cv-00636) filed in the Southern District of Alabama. The plaintiff alleges that Invokana caused her to develop ketoacidosis, a potentially deadly condition primarily affecting diabetic patients. Her claim states that she began taking the drug in December of 2014 and developed ketoacidosis within a short time after.

The claim alleges a link between the drug itself and the development of the disorder. The FDA have, after receiving several adverse event reports from patients, issued a requirement to Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Invokana, to make additions to the warning label. The label must now inform patients of the potential for developing ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis is a condition which occurs, approximately 95% of the time, in diabetic patients. It occurs when there is an excess of toxic acids in the bloodstream, which can result in coma or even death for the patient. When not treated immediately, the risk of these outcomes continues to increase and unfortunately, the symptoms may not immediately be recognized.

Patients who are taking Invokana to manage their type 2 diabetes are advised to be aware of any developing symptoms which could indicate the development of ketoacidosis. These symptoms can include nausea and vomiting, frequent urination, confusion and shortness of breath. A usual indicator for the development of the condition is high blood sugar, yet several reports to the FDA indicated that patients who took Invokana and developed ketoacidosis did not present this symptom delaying the diagnosis.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
