Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims SGLT2 Class Inhibitor Drug Caused Her Kidney Failure

March 23, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on allegations made by a plaintiff who has filed a lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson corporation) discussing new-generation drug Invokana. The plaintiff alleges that the diabetes drug can put patients at elevated risk for the development of kidney damage and failure. It has been reported, that in 2013 after the drug was released to market, within the first year Invokana had been the topic of 50 adverse event reports to the FDA which noted the development of renal impairment and kidney failure among patients taking it.

The SGLT2 class inhibitor drug was one of several similar drugs to be released to market after gaining approval to treat type-2 diabetes patients from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The drug works by regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels in these patients. It does this by stopping the kidneys from reabsorbing extra sugar, and instead removing that extra sugar from the body through urination. In doing this, however, the drug relies quite heavily on the kidneys, and can potentially stress and damage them. Unfortunately, damaged kidneys are unable to be treated or repaired. Patients with significantly damaged kidneys will require complete kidney transplants, and likely dialysis until this becomes a possibility.
