Invokana Lawsuit: Plaintiff is Alleging that Side Effects Resulted in Severe Injury Suffering From Ketoacidosis

April 24, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com announces a pending suit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, maker of the Type II Diabetes drug, Invokana. A plaintiff is alleging that Invokana side effects of ketoacidosis resulted in severe injury and suffering. She states that her damages are in excess of $10 million and should be paid immediately by the maker of the drug and its parent company, Johnson & Johnson. This is because the woman allegedly took the drug and developed diabetic ketoacidosis. The case has been filed in New Jersey though the woman is from Texas.

According to the lawsuit, the woman began taking the drug in October of 2013 (it was released to the public in March of the same year). Within less than one month she started experiencing health problems that led her to stop taking the drug in November 2013. The drug had been prescribed to her as treatment for her Type II Diabetes, which it had been FDA approved to treat. Within the one month time period she developed ketoacidosis as well as kidney damage which is irreversible.

Ketoacidosis is a condition which primarily affects diabetic patients and occurs when acid, known as ketones, builds up in the blood. If treatment is not carried out immediately it can result in coma or even death for the patient. This is not the only negative condition presently under investigation however, as the FDA is also looking into reports of kidney damage.

The kidney damage is alleged to occur possibly as a result of the way in which the drug works. The drug stops the kidneys from absorbing extra glucose that enters the body. In order to do this, it expels the glucose through urination. As a result, the kidneys are forced to work harder than normal to expel the excess waste. Several individuals who have taken the drug claim to have suffered from kidney damage and the plaintiff alleges that it has also happened here. Several adverse event reports have led to the FDA release of warnings and new requirements for Janssen Pharmaceuticals to add labels regarding these potential side effects to their drug.
