Invokana Lawsuit: Plaintiffs Allege Side Effects Cause Kidney Impairment and Kidney Failure

April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on possible side effects of an increased risk for the development of kidney damage and kidney failure in some patients using Invokana, a new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug. Not even being on the market for one year, the US Food and Drug Administration reported receiving 50 adverse event reports detailing the development of renal impairment and kidney failure among patients taking the drug.

The FDA approved Invokana in March of 2013. It was meant to help patients with type-2 diabetes maintain their blood sugar (glucose) levels and primarily relied upon the kidneys to work in that the drug prevented the kidneys from reabsorbing excess sugar, and instead facilitated its removal by the kidneys through urination. Because of this very heavy reliance on the kidneys, the drug placed an inordinate amount of stress on them in order to work as it was intended.

The FDA released a public safety memorandum in December of 2015 that highlighted the potential Invokana side effects as well as requiring the manufacturer of Invokana, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson and Johnson, to amend its product warning label to better reflect some of the FDA’s new concerns over the drug.

In its report, the FDA also stated that it had received 19 adverse event reports highlighting patients who had developed life-threatening health complications while using Invokana that began as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and later, as the bacteria spread through the body, turned into blood and kidney infections. All of the 19 patients identified in the adverse event reports ultimately required hospitalization and dialysis in order to treat the kidneys. Kidney damage is very dangerous and such damage cannot be reversed or repaired. In the case of severely damaged kidneys, a full kidney transplant is required. Since it is a very intricate and complicated procedure, some patients are not always lucky enough to survive the ordeal.
