Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Claim They Were Not Warned Of Possible Side Effects Of Drug

May 15, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit related to side effects linked to Invokana use that has been filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Invokana, and a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Corporation. The plaintiff in the case is a Texas woman who alleges she endured serious complications from a life-threatening condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis, which she alleges is a potential side effect of the drug. The condition in relation to the drug has been a topic of concern for many patients and medical professionals and has been closely scrutinized in the media. The plaintiff is seeking in excess of $10 million for damages that she claims to have allegedly resulted from her use of Invokana, a new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a situation that can develop very quickly, where the body’s bloodstream contains an inordinate amount of toxic acid due to the production of ketones. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, It can be life-threatening as the patient can become comatose or even die.

In addition to ketoacidosis, and as per adverse event reports filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), another commonly linked potential side effect is kidney damage since the drug heavily relies on the use of the kidneys. The drug is designed to remove excess sugar from the patient’s blood via urination, thus putting extra stress on the organs. Once damage occurs to the kidneys, it cannot be reversed, and those that have severe kidney damage many times require dialysis, and a kidney transplant, a long, onerous process.

Additionally, as per additional details from the plaintiff’s court documents filed with the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, the patient started using Invokana to treat type-2 diabetes in October 2013, and after a very short time, she alleges to have developed diabetic ketoacidosis, along with experiencing adverse impacts to her kidneys. In November 2013, she ceased using Invokana.
