Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Note Adverse Event Side Effects Reporting Kidney Failure Among Patients

February 29, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on new-generation type-2 diabetes drug Invokana news which has linked the medication through FDA adverse event reports to severe kidney risks, especially for patients with pre-existing kidney problems. It has recently been reported that within its first year on the market alone, the drug was linked to more than 50 renal impairment and kidney failure reports in patients.

Invokana depends heavily on the kidneys. Because of this, it can potentially cause some serious problems for them. Once damaged, kidneys are unable to be repaired, making even moderate kidney damage a pressing medical issue. In addition, one of the risk factors of diabetes, in general, is that it can cause kidney damage, especially over time. Patients who have suffered from diabetes for quite some time can be at increased risk for kidney failure, even without a medication which stresses the kidneys more.

Invokana helps individuals with type-2 diabetes by maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. To do this, the drug prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing any extra sugar (glucose) and instead forces the sugar out of the body via urination. It is one of several new-generation drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, or SGLT2.

On December 4th of 2015, Invokana was the subject of a safety communication by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This communication announced new label warning requirements for the drug, specifically relating to a life-threatening condition called ketoacidosis and urinary tract infections. It has been noted by the FDA, as well, that between March of 2013 and October of 2014, the FDA received 19 adverse event reports about patients who had developed various life-threatening health complications stemming from urinary tract infections which expanded to form blood and kidney infections. All of the 19 patients required hospitalization and dialysis due to kidney failure.

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) published information in their May 2015 QuarterWatch report which warned about Invokana’s links to more than 457 adverse events which were termed serious or severe within the first year of its release alone. Of these reports, 54 discussed kidney failure and renal impairment. Kidneys do imperative work by filtering toxins from the body. When this important process stops working, a patient is considered to be in kidney failure.
