Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiffs Note Numerous Reports Of Drug Side Effects To FDA

May 15, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on an Invokana lawsuit filed by a Texas woman seeking more than $10 million to compensate her for serious injuries she claims to have suffered resulting from the use of the sodium-glucose cotransporter2 (SGLT2) inhibitor drug. The lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of corporate giant Johnson and Johnson.

Specifically, and based on examination of court documents, the plaintiff alleges that she developed diabetic ketoacidosis, as well as kidney damage, shortly after she began taking Invokana in October 2013 as a treatment for her type-2 diabetes. Due to the onset of this life-threatening condition, in November of the same year, the plaintiff ceased using Invokana. This court case, along with others involving possible Invokana side effects, has caused Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitor drugs to be a topic of public concern, especially for diabetes patients taking the drugs, and has precipitated much more scrutiny of the potential side effects caused by the drug.

Ketoacidosis is a very dangerous medical condition. It sometimes is not diagnosed properly and if left untreated can cause diabetic coma or even death as it causes the body’s blood to become acidic and toxic. Any diabetes patient taking an SGLT2 inhibitor drug should be very cognizant of anything that may seem out of the ordinary and report it to their medical professional immediately.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received numerous complaint filings related to kidney damage linked to Invokana. Invokana facilitates proper blood-glucose (sugar) levels by removing excess sugar from the body via urination. This process places an extra burden on the kidneys, thus creating a potential for irreparable kidney damage that often results in dialysis being needed along with a kidney transplant that can take a very long time.
