Invokana Lawsuit: Side Effects Allegedly Caused Heart Attacks and Strokes During Clinical Trials of Invokana, a Drug to Treat Diabetes

May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the discovered risks found during Invokana clinical trials undertaken for the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor drug. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Invokana and its release to the market in March of 2013. The FDA reported that during the clinical trials for Invokana, 13 diabetes patients taking the drug appeared to have experienced a heart attack or stroke within the first 30 days of treatment with Invokana. After this period of time, the alleged risks seemed to have ebbed without any clear explanation as to why and were not quite as predominant.

Heart attacks generally are brought on when an issue inside the body prevents adequate blood flow to the heart. The primary cause of this impediment to proper blood flow is usually a blood clot. The blood clot will create a situation where the heart is not getting enough oxygen to ensure its proper functioning. When this occurs, the heart muscle begins to deteriorate and does not pump blood to the body as effectively as it should. The ensuing result is usually a heart attack which many times can be fatal.

In an article by the New York Times, these issues that arose during the clinical trials were discussed. The Times article made mention that the drug’s warning label did not contain any indication that a possible heart attack or stroke could result as a side effect of taking the drug. The article also reported that the FDA was mandating that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, and the manufacturer of Invokana, pursue additional studies of the drug, particularly a subsequent clinical trial to investigate further any possible connection that the drug causes heart attacks or strokes in patients using the drug to treat their diabetic condition.
