Invokana Lawsuit: Side Effects Prompt FDA Public Health Warnings

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the recent release of a serious warning issued by the European Medicines Agency in regards to over a 100 cases of diabetic ketoacidosis linked to the used of Invokana and other SGLT2 class inhibitor drugs. The EMA stated that in most cases of diabetic ketoacidosis patients demonstrated high blood sugar levels, however in a number of these recent cases blood glucose levels were only moderately increased. These atypical blood sugar levels make it difficult to properly diagnose this ailment and thus delay timely treatment.

Diabetic ketoacidosis can be a life-threatening condition that is brought about when the body produces a toxic acid which enters the bloodstream. When the body fails to maintain adequate levels of blood glucose to produce sufficient energy, it will instead burn fat storage to use as energy. These ketones (acid) build up in the bloodstream. When untreated this condition of blood toxicity can be life-threatening.

Several lawsuits have already been filed against the manufacturers of Invokana citing serious health conditions that have been linked with the medication. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also received a number of adverse event reports that claim possible links to serious side-effects of Invokana and other similar SGLT2 class inhibitor drugs.

As a result of all these reports and adverse claims, the FDA released a public safety warning in December of 2015 advising patients to be aware of these incidents. They also required the manufacturer of Invokana (Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson corporation) to change the labels on the drug to indicate the potential health risks associated with the medication.

“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
