Invokana Lawsuit States Drug Usage Lead To Kidney Failure
April 19, 2016 – – The ProductLawyers.com comments on type-2 diabetes drug Invokana, and its link to more than 50 reports of kidney failure and renal impairments o patients using the drug. Invokana is a prescription drug introduced in March 2013, for patients with type-2 diabetes to help control blood sugar levels.
Invokana is classified as a sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and works by inhibiting the normal kidney functions in a way that allows the body to expel more sugar through the urine. As the drug heavily relies on the kidneys, it poses severe risks to patients who have preexisting kidney problems. In May 2015, an independent report (PDF) by the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) highlighted potential concerns about the possible link between Invokana and kidney failure. The group revealed in their QuarterWatch report that at least 450 serious adverse event reports received in the first year that the drug was on the market. Among those reports were over 50 involving renal impairment or kidney failure.
In December 2015, the FDA announced a public safety warning discussing changes which had been applied to the warning label on Invokana. The new Invokana warnings would advise patients to seek immediate medical assistance if they showed signs of a urinary tract infection, as this could be an indication of a fatal blood or kidney infection. Damage to the kidneys may become permanent requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. If not treated on time, it could lead to death.
“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
