Invokana Lawsuit: Woman From Texas Claims That, Upon Taking the Drug Invokana, Side Effects Included the Development of Ketoacidosis

May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on an Invokana complaint filed in New Jersey which alleges a link between the type II diabetes drug and diabetic ketoacidosis. A woman from Texas claims that, upon taking the drug Invokana, she suddenly developed the condition. Her lawsuit asks for an excess of $10 million in damages as a direct result of the life-threatening condition that she found herself in, which she claims was a result of the drug itself.

According to the lawsuit, the woman in question began taking the drug in October of 2013. By November of 2013 she had stopped taking it because she developed diabetic ketoacidosis. The drug had been prescribed as approved by the FDA, for the treatment of her type II diabetes. The drug is intended to work by managing the patient’s blood sugar levels. Within the one month period that she took the drug however, the plaintiff began suffering damage to her kidneys as well as ketoacidosis. These problems have caused long-term damage as kidney damage is irreversible.

Ketoacidosis, a condition which occurs primarily in diabetic patients, is caused by a high level of acid in the bloodstream. When this occurs it can cause coma or even death within only 24 hours if untreated. In most instances, ketoacidosis occurs with a high level of blood sugar, thus making it easier to diagnose and treat. When taking Invokana, however, ketoacidosis may occur without high blood sugar levels and, as a result, may take longer to properly diagnose and treat. In these cases it can result in even more problems and the potential for serious damage.

The FDA has since issued a public safety warning for all patients who take Invokana. The statement informs patients of the potential risk of this condition developing if they are taking the medication and also warns them to be on the lookout for any signs or symptoms of ketoacidosis that may occur.
