Invokana Lawsuit: Woman is Claiming That, Upon Taking Invokana, Side Effects Caused Her to Suffer Kidney Damage and Ketoacidosis
May 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a lawsuit filed in New Jersey which seeks $10 million in damages against Invokana maker Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The plaintiff claims that, upon taking Invokana, she began to suffer kidney damage and ketoacidosis.
Invokana is one of many SGLT2 inhibitors that has been released in the last several years. This type of drug works by blocking the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose and therefore helps to eliminate excess glucose from the body. That excess glucose must be forced out by the kidneys, however, and this can cause the kidneys to become strained. Overworking or strain on the kidneys can result in damage to the organs and this can be especially concerning for those that have preexisting kidneys conditions. When strain becomes too much it can result in kidney failure, which requires dialysis and kidney transplant.
After only about a month of taking Invokana the plaintiff claims that she developed diabetic ketoacidosis. The condition can be life-threatening if not treated immediately and can occur quickly, within 24 hours. Symptoms often include fatigue, confusion, nausea and vomiting and excessive thirst which may or may not be accompanied by high blood sugar. This is not common in regards to ketoacidosis which nearly always presents with high blood sugar. The FDA has issued a safety warning in regard to diabetic ketoacidosis warning patients of the potential for these problems. They note that it is imperative to seek medical treatment immediately if these symptoms occur due to the severe nature of the condition.
“We are currently investigating several cases where individuals who took an SGLT2, such as Invokana, Farxiga or Jardiance, subsequently were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney complications, heart attack and stroke. If we prove that these complications were caused by the drug, we look forward to aggressively pursuing the rights of our clients and recovering just compensation for their pain and suffering, and for what their families may have had to endure,” stated attorney Laurence Banville, a defective drug and product lawyer and sponsor of TheProductLawyers.com.
