Invokana Side Effects Allegedly Caused Diabetic Ketoacidosis as per Pending Lawsuit

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on an Invokana lawsuit filed in the Southern District of Alabama against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the maker of Invokana, as well as a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Corporation, alleging that the use of the drug created a life-threatening medical condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. The plaintiff alleges that she began taking Invokana in December 2014 and shortly after developed the ketoacidosis. She also states in court documents that she was never made aware of the this particular side effect and that Janssen Pharmaceuticals was negligent and liable for her condition in that it did not properly inform patients of this potential very serious medical problem.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening medical condition that can cause comatose state or even death in extreme cases. According to the American Diabetes Association, when there is not enough glucose available in the body, it will begin to burn stored fat that produces ketones. The function of ketones is to break down fat for energy. If there is an excess amount of ketones, it will cause the blood to become acidic which causes the patient to become very ill and can happen very quickly in some cases.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a public safety communication that discussed this possible side effect and linkage to the use of the drug and other like it. The agency also mandated that Janssen Pharmaceuticals amend the product’s warning label accordingly. The safety communication also states that after receiving multiple adverse event reports indicating that patients using Invokana had developed ketoacidosis, it is also asking patients that have used Invokana or similar SGLT2 inhibitor drugs to be aware of possible signs of the development of this condition. The Mayo Clinic states that these signs can include excessive thirst, confusion, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, fruity-scented breath, and shortness of breath.
