Invokana Side Effects are the Subject of Lawsuit Filed Alleging Development of Diabetic Ketoacidosis
April 19, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on an Invokana side effects lawsuit filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subdivision of corporate giant Johnson & Johnson. The case is was filed in the Southern District of Alabama and is listed as number 1:15-cv-00636. The plaintiff in the lawsuit alleges that her use of Invokana, a new-generation diabetes drug, to be the cause of the development of her diabetic ketoacidosis. As per court documents, the plaintiff claims she started using the SGLT2 inhibitor drug in December of 2014 and not long after, developed diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening medical condition.
If untreated, diabetic ketoacidosis can be very dangerous. The disease is caused by an excess amount of toxic acid in the body’s bloodstream. This condition has been known to develop very quickly, sometimes in as little as 24 hour’s time. In the extreme cases some patients have become comatose or have died.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has discussed this possible life-threatening side effect and the possible link to the use of Invokana. The agency is requesting that patients taking the drug or other similar SGLT2 inhibitor to be aware of possible signs of the development of diabetic ketoacidosis. The Mayo Clinic has stated that signs of the disease can include but is not limited to, excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, fruity-scented breath, and confusion.
The plaintiff also alleges that she was never made aware of the possible side effect of developing diabetic ketoacidosis while taking Invokana. She is also claiming that Janssen Pharmaceuticals negligently failed to properly warn medical professionals and patients of this potential side effect. Since the time lawsuit’s filing, the FDA has subsequently issued a public safety notice dealing with the possible connection of the drug to ketoacidosis, and has mandated that Janssen Pharmaceuticals amend its warning labels to better explain the possible side effects.
