Invokana Side Effects Precipitate Lawsuit Alleging Development of Diabetic Ketoacidosis

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on alleged Invokana side effects that precipitated a lawsuit filed in the Southern District of Alabama against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Invokana, a new-generation, type 2 diabetes drug. The plaintiff alleges that she developed diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening medical condition, after she started taking Invokana in December 2014. She claims in her lawsuit, that she was unaware of the possible side effect that could result from taking the drug and that Janssen Pharmaceuticals should be held liable and acted negligently by neglecting to inform patients of this potentially debilitating condition.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a very serious medical condition that can induce a diabetic coma or even death in some instances. According to the American Diabetes Association, cells in our body begin to burn body fat when there is not enough glucose available, which results in the production of ketones. The primary purpose of ketones is to break down the fat for energy production. However, blood will become acidic when there is an excess amount of ketones, thus causing the patient, sometimes in less than 24 hours, to fall very ill.

After receiving numerous adverse event reports indicating that diabetes patients had developed this condition after use of Invokana, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a public safety communication highlighting this possible linkage and mandated a change in the product’s warning label. The FDA is asking Invokana patients or those using similar SGLT2 inhibitor drugs, to be aware of any possible signs of ketoacidosis. The American Diabetes Association has stated that early warning signs may excessive thirst or dry mouth, frequent urination, high blood sugar levels, and high levels of ketones in the urine. Other symptoms that could appear include constantly being tired, confusion, dry or flushed skin, nausea, vomiting or pain in the abdomen, difficulty breathing, or a fruity breath odor.
