Invokana Side Effects Prompt Lawsuit Claiming Diabetic Ketoacidosis Resulted from Taking Drug

April 25, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on a lawsuit filed in the Southern District of Alabama against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Corporation, the focus of which is related to their new-generation, type 2 diabetes drug Invokana. The plaintiff in the case alleges that she developed diabetic ketoacidosis after she started taking Invokana in December 2014. The plaintiff further alleges that she was never made aware of the potential risks of developing ketoacidosis as a result of taking Invokana and that Janssen Pharmaceuticals was negligent in its failure to inform.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a very serious and life-threatening condition that can cause patients to become comatose or even die in a worst case scenario if untreated. This situation arises when there is an abnormal amount of toxic acid in the bloodstream, known as ketones, that occur when fat is broken down for energy. It can develop very fast, in as little as 24 hours in some cases, and can appear in some instances without any notable increase in one’s blood sugar levels.

In response to numerous adverse event reports about the drug, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public safety warning that addresses the possible linkage between the use of Invokana and the onset of diabetic ketoacidosis. The FDA report also mandates that Janssen Pharmaceuticals amend its warning label to better address this potentially lethal possible side effect.

Additionally, the FDA has also encouraged diabetes patients who are using Invokana or any other similar SGLT2 inhibitor drugs to be vigilant and watch for any potential signs of the development of ketoacidosis. The American Diabetes Association has reported on symptoms to be aware of such as excessive thirst or dry mouth, frequent urination, high blood sugar levels, high levels of ketones in the urine, difficulty breathing, pain in the abdomen, nausea or vomiting, confusion and fatigue.
