IVC Filter Lawsuit Cases Filed by Patients, Who Claim Devices Have Life-Threatening Risks

June 17, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on IVC filters approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1979. IVC filters are implanted into patients who are not able to use traditional blood-thinning drugs but are at an increased risk for blood clots. The IVC filters are small, cage-like devices surgically placed into a patient’s inferior vena cava vein. The filters are designed to catch and trap potential blood clots traveling from the lower body toward the heart and lungs. The purpose of trapping the clot is to reduce the potential risk of the patient suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

These filters have been used with increasing frequency since gaining FDA approval. In 1979 there were only just 2,000 patients using them compared with 167,000 in 2007.

As per an NBC news report, however, there appears to be some increasing concern over the devices as the FDA has released a public safety communication that identifies several potential health risks, including some life-threatening issues. There has also been an increase in the number of lawsuits being filed against various manufacturers of the filters.

The FDA states in its public release that even though the devices are meant to be removed as soon as the patient is no longer at risk of blood clots, some plaintiffs have reported that the devices can potentially fracture while inside the body, causing a puncturing of veins and organs, or even becoming lodged in the intestines and other high-risk areas where the pieces may not be able to be removed, thus causing severe health complications for the patient.

As many patients await their trial dates, IVC filters continue to generate more news and controversy.
