IVC Filter Lawsuit Cases Filed Patients Claiming Device Manufacturers Produced Devices With Flawed Design

June 17, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the potential risks of using IVC filters produced by a number of manufacturers. The device was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1979 as an alternative to blood-thinning drugs for patients who could not use them but are at risk of forming blood clots. The purpose of an IVC filter is to reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism by blocking block clots from moving from the lower extremities to the heart and lungs. The IVC filter, a small cage-like structure, is surgically placed in a patient’s body and removed when the threat of a blood clot has passed.

Since the approval of the IVC filter, over 167,000 have been implanted into patients, up from only 2,000 when it was first approved by the FDA in 1979.

In addition to disconcerting medical research, as well as a public safety statement released by the FDA, there seems to be increasing scrutiny and concern over the use of some brands of IVC filters. Research has appeared to have linked the filters to some potentially life-threatening health risks, some of which could be life-threatening. Some patients have claimed that the filters, before their removal, have actually fractured inside the body, with pieces traveling in the bloodstream. Such fracturing and movement of the pieces could puncture veins and organs, and get stuck in the intestines, and other sensitive areas, where they may not be able to be removed. Severe consequences could result.

Many of the patients that have experienced issues have filed lawsuits against the numerous makers of the devices alleging that the design of the filters was flawed. More news and controversy could be forthcoming as these plaintiffs await their day in court.
