IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiff Alleges Filter Device Embedded In Internal Organ Cannot Be Surgically Removed
April 22, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on alleged IVC filter failures which have been reported by patients from across the nation, some of which state that they have been left in both pain and emotional turmoil due to the risk of future health complications. Multiple IVC filter patients have reported that they were left with broken pieces of the filter devices within their bodies which have migrated and have punctured organs and veins or have become lodged in areas that are deemed too risky for surgeons to attempt to remove them. Affected patients note that they are left wondering when the devices will move again, and worrying over what damage they may cause.
A plaintiff from South Dakota states that she had an Eclipse IVC filter manufactured by C.R. Bard surgically implanted into her body in an attempt to protect her from blood clots traveling from the lower body toward the heart and lungs which could cause a pulmonary embolism. IVC filters are cage-like devices which are implanted directly into patients’ inferior vena cava veins. They work to catch and hold traveling blood clots until they dissipate, and are used among patients who are at risk for the development of blood clots but who are unable to take traditional blood-thinning drugs. The woman’s IVC filter was intended to be used temporarily while she was at increased risk for blood clots, and removed when this risk had subsided.
Instead, however, the woman indicates that this filter device is now permanently stuck inside of her body. She explains that it became dislodged and traveled from its original location until it became embedded into her internal organs. She indicates that surgeons attempted to remove the filter but were unsuccessful. She states that this filter places her at risk for increased health complications which could potentially be life-threatening. Every day, she reported that she lives in fear, and knows that there is a possibility of a sudden catastrophic event occurring within her body at any point due to the filter.
