IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiffs Claim Temporary IVC Filters Have Fractured And Migrated

July 05, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the use of IVC filters and the controversy surrounding the medical devices. Several plaintiffs have alleged that the devices have migrated to another part of the body from their original implantation point. IVC filters are placed in the Inferior Vena Cava vein which carries blood from the lower body to the heart and lungs. The device is generally used in patients that cannot take blood-thinning medications. Its purpose is to capture blood clots originating in the lower body and prevent them from reaching the heart and lungs which could cause a pulmonary embolism or other serious medical conditions. When the threat of blood clots has passed the device should be removed.

There have been a number of patients, however, who have filed lawsuits claiming the units are dangerous and have been defectively designed. Many suits claim that the filters have fractured and the pieces have migrated to other parts of the body. This could cause puncturing of veins and blood vessels and well as the possibility of the pieces becoming embedded in the intestines or other vital organs. Another issue being identified in various lawsuits is that the pieces have migrated to high-risk areas of the body where surgical removal is not possible. Unfortunately, those migrated pieces must be left in the patient which could potentially cause severe health complications.

IVC filters have been around since 1979 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved them. Only 2,000 were implanted that year but by 2007 that number rose to 167,000 implantations.

Those patients filing lawsuits all across the United States are now patiently waiting for their trial dates and more cases are expected to be filed given the increased publicity and the controversial nature of the filters.
