IVC Filter Lawsuit Plaintiffs Note Adverse Event Reports Concerning Severe Filter Migration Side Effects
April 18, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on concerning new allegations surrounding IVC filters and the possibility that they were designed defectively and dangerously. In the year 2012, an estimated 259,000 patients were implanted with IVC filters. This number has come a long way since 1979, when the filters were first FDA-approved and implanted in around 2,000 patients. The filters are surgically placed into patients’ inferior vena cava veins, where they work to block potential blood clots traveling from the lower body toward the heart and lungs where they could cause pulmonary embolism.
The filters are much like wire cages, and hold to the walls of the inferior vena cava vessel using multiple wire “struts”. These devices however, have been alleged by many plaintiffs to have been defectively designed. Patients claim that they are able to fracture and travel within the body, puncturing veins and organs, or becoming lodged in risky places where they may be unable to be removed.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety communication regarding the devices after a concerning number of adverse events have been reported by patients implanted with the filters. In this communication, the FDA alerted medical professionals and patients alike to possible dangers surrounding the devices, and instructed those using the devices to remove them as soon as blood clot risks subside. It was reported that between the years of 2005 and 2010 alone, the FDA received a total of 921 adverse event reports discussing the filters. Adverse events reported filter migration, embolization of fractured device components, inferior vena cava perforation, and filter fracture.
It has been noted that for patients currently implanted with IVC filter devices, migration symptoms can include: chest pain and heart palpitations, light-headedness or fainting, and abnormal heart rhythms. Patents who suffer from this occurrence are considered to be at significant risk for severe health complications such as cardiac tamponade or pulmonary embolism.
