IVC Filter Lawsuits And Concerning Patient Deaths Reviewed In NBC News Investigation
April 20, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on concerning details discussed in an NBC News Investigation which highlighted that in just over a decade’s time, the Recovery IVC filter manufactured by C.R. Bard has been connected to at least 27 deaths and more than 300 injuries. This alarming discovery comes at a time when hundreds of lawsuits are being filed against C.R. Bard regarding the medical devices, and alleging that they have been defectively and dangerously designed.
Plaintiffs who have filed lawsuits against C.R. Bard allege that their IVC filter devices can fracture into pieces and travel from their original implant location to pierce veins or become embedded in intestines and internal organs. IVC devices are used in patients who are deemed at increased risk for the development of blood clots, but who are unable to take traditional blood-thinning drugs. The small, cage-like filters are implanted into a patients’ inferior vena cava veins where they filter blood traveling from the lower legs toward the lungs and heart in order to prevent pulmonary embolism or other life-threatening events. According to plaintiff allegations, however, the filters are improperly designed, and manufacturers like C.R. Bard have been negligent in neglecting to adequately warn consumers and medical professionals about these possible dangerous side effects.
IVC filter placement is intended to be a temporary blood clot prevention tactic, and the device is supposed to be retrieved when patients are no longer deemed at increased risk for the development of blood clots. The FDA has issued a safety communication regarding the devices and noted that they should ideally be removed between 29 and 54 days after implantation to avoid increased risks. Several current IVC lawsuit plaintiffs allege that the filters have migrated and are now so deeply embedded into high-risk areas within their body that doctors are unable to safely remove them.
