IVC Filter Lawsuits Mount As Plaintiffs Commonly Claim The Devices Fracture and Migrate

April 22, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com comments on details regarding current IVC (inferior vena cava) filter lawsuits. The inferior vena cava is a major vein which transports blood from the lower body toward the lungs and heart. IVC filters are cage-like devices which are surgically implanted into patients’ IVC veins in an attempt to block and hold possible blood clots so that they are unable to travel toward the heart and lungs, and cause pulmonary embolism or other life-threatening risks.

The devices are intended to be implanted temporarily in patients who are unable to take traditional blood thinners, but who are deemed at increased risk for the development of blood clots. When each patient’s blood clot risk subsides, the filters are supposed to be promptly removed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has made a safety communication regarding this, and has recommended that surgeons remove the filters within 29-54 days after implantation if clotting risks are no longer present.

Removing the devices in this way has become a topic of great concern as certain patients filing IVC filter-related lawsuits have indicated that the filters are able to move from their implantation sites and travel within the body, causing health complications. They have also been noted to fracture into smaller pieces, and puncture veins, blood vessels, or organs, and even become embedded in organs or intestines. Several patients have even reported that their IVC filter devices are now unable to ever be surgically removed as they have become deeply lodged in areas which pose too high of a risk for surgery.

Those who claim that their IVC filters will remain within their bodies permanently express significant worry over this fact. One plaintiff compared herself to a “ticking time bomb,” stating that she lived in fear that the filter inside of her might once again break additionally and move, threatening her life.
