IVC Lawsuit Plaintiffs See Concerning Results From IVC Filter Study Conducted By French Researchers
April 27, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the alarming study results which were published in JAMA. The study was conducted by French researchers on IVC filter devices in order to determine their overall effectiveness. Concerning study results, however, appear to indicate that IVC filter use provides no additional benefits for patients who could use blood-thinning drugs alone.
During the study, researchers observed close to 400 patients from France who were deemed at increased risk for pulmonary embolism due to the fact that they had lower-limb venous thrombosis. These patients were carefully observed and then randomly assigned to use either a blood-thinning drug alone or to be implanted with an IVC filter device.
Study results showed that 3% of the patients who were implanted with IVC filter devices had experienced fatal pulmonary embolisms. Among the patients who took only blood thinners, however, just 1.5% experienced pulmonary embolisms (3 patients) and one of the 3 patients who suffered from the pulmonary embolism survived.
Additional side effects which were reportedly experienced by patients implanted with IVC filters included: access site hematoma, filter thrombosis, and an inability to remove the filter device. Additionally, it was noted that one patient in the study had gone into cardiac arrest during IVC filter insertion. After compiling the findings of their study, French researchers concluded, “These findings do not support the use of this type of filter in patients who can be treated with anticoagulation.”
